Religious identity is a powerful organizer of social life — but does it shape economic integration and assimilation? This paper uses large-scale historical census data to estimate the effect of religious divisions on assimilation outcomes, using the geographic distribution of denominations across communities as a source of quasi-experimental variation.
The paper is part of the Conflict and Development project, which examines how historical religious and ethnic divisions shape long-run economic and social outcomes.
